The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), part of the CFMMEU, has announced industrial action starting on 06 October at DP World terminals in connection with negotiations for a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EA). Actions include 24-hour work stoppages and work bans at Sydney, Melbourne, Fremantle, and Brisbane terminals. The actions vary in duration and type across locations:
- Fremantle: Begins with a 24-hour stoppage on 06 October along with other bans. Workers will then take stoppages ranging from four to 12 hours on 07 October.
- Melbourne: 24-hour stoppage on 08 October, a 12-hour stoppage on 09 October, an eight-hour stoppage on 10 October, with additional shorter interruptions in the subsequent weeks.
- Sydney and Brisbane: Only work bans.

DP World’s Executive Vice President for Oceania, Nicolaj Noes, emphasises the company’s commitment to a productive dialogue with the MUA and highlights concerns about the economic impact of the action, estimating potential damages of over $11 million daily. Despite 28 meetings between the parties, differences persist. DP World notes the potential negative impact on the Australian supply chain and consumer costs if most of the union’s 363 claims are accepted. The company seeks changes to workforce rosters for better customer service flexibility.
